As a sophomore in college I learned of TANSTAAFL; the concept that a society cannot get "something for nothing". Even if that something appears to be free, there is always a cost to society as a whole even though that cost may be hidden or distributed elsewhere.  TANSTAAFL came to mind while reading a thought provoking article on flaws within our health care system, written by David Goldhill; published in the September issue of the Atlantic.  David lost his father to a hospital borne infection which lead him on a crusade to find answers as to how this could have happened. 
 
I will warn you that this is a lengthy article; but I would suggest it is worth the investment in time.  He makes an interesting case for reform thru a consumer centered system.  READ MORE.
